11. How do recruitment agencies work? Recruitment agencies work for both companies and job seekers. Companies will generally come to them with job vacancies they want to be filled, Recruitment Agencies will then post a job vacancy through various tools such LinkedIn, indeed, numerous job boards and their own site. They might create LinkedIn campaigns to attract people from within their network to the job.

The Recruitment business will also have an internal database of job seekers or candidates, which they can start searching through to come up with the perfect shortlist for the business. They then pre-screen the people, prep them and put them forward for an interview with the employer.

If a recruitment businesses candidate is successful, the client will pay a fee for the service. This is generally a percentage of the candidate’s annual salary. Those fees will depend on the sector the business works in and the arrangement with the company. If the business retains the Recruitment Agency on an exclusive basis, fees can be 20% cheaper.

12. I’m a jobseeker. Do I have to pay recruitment agencies?

No, the fee will be covered by the company.

The services of a recruitment agency are completely free for jobseekers and the benefits can be fantastic. The more experience a Recruiter is, the more you will get out of the relationship. We can help you position yourself better in your job search, give you advice around your CV layout, how to prepare and conduct yourself in an interview and of course give you access to jobs you may not even know about. A recruiter will have spent time or know a company well, to offer just a little more then applying directly.

13. How do Recruitment consultants get paid?

Like any job, a Recruitment consultant will have a basic salary and then make a commission on the income they get for putting folks in jobs, remember that is paid by the company. Now this does depend on the agency. What can give Recruiters a bad name is how this commission structure is laid out. I hear lots of complaints about Recruiters being pushy, or in some cases rude if you decide to take another role. Recruiters have targets. Some targets are aggressive. So these Recruiters don’t like to lose a sale. You will know the type and I would avoid. You want a reasonable, knowledgeable and empathetic Recruiter.

14. Who are recruitment consultants really working for?

The nature of any job is to make money. In order to make money, Recruiters have to find people jobs. They have to suit the jobseeker. They cannot offer a job to someone without an agreement with a company. So, Recruitment Consultants have two customers. clients and candidates. Its impossible to make money without both.

There is an important difference between the 2 customers. The company is the one who pays the fee. Recruitment Consultants will be limited to the number of jobs they work on. A job seeker will receive a free service from recruitment agencies. A company has to pay a so it’s important that recruitment consultants work hard to find the perfect candidate for their clients.

A well-matched candidate who is happy with their new job means a better relationship with the Recruiter. So, Recruiters will have a job seekers best interest at heart, most of the time. Elwood Roberts will always strive to do our best to offer transparent, if we can’t help, we will tell you! We work hard to help people find their dream job, prepare everyone diligently for applying and interviews, work with you all the way through the process.

15. What happens to my data as a candidate?

GDPR rules mean that your data should not be kept on file without your permission. We treat our candidates’ data with respect. When we put a candidate into the system, see our privacy policy for more details. We will contact people if relevant jobs come up. Currently we do now have a subscrption email system. So any email you get from Elwood Roberts will be a job relevant to you. Now, all Recruitment businesses are the same. I would recommend checking each privacy policy for each Recruitment Company you work with.

The data is shared by the job seeker and we get permission from them to share it with the client and we keep the candidate informed at all stages. That would be standard practice.  CVs won’t (nor should be) be sent blindly to several companies without initially telling the job seeker and talking to them first.

16. Will a Recruitment agency be honest about the bad parts of a role?

A good recruiter will always present a full picture of a job, the company and the problems as well as the major reasons someone might want the job. Our team believes it’s important to never hide the bad parts of the role because you will find out eventually. It will reflect badly on the Recruiter and could make the person leave the business. At Elwood Roberts we are always transparent. We also ask those hard questions to the business to find the most suitable personality and cultural fit for the job.

Every company has problems, but all jobs will also have benefits and opportunities for the right person. Elwood Roberts we can’t speak for all recruitment businesses, nor would we want to. Are they all honest. No. But I know the best in the industry are. Honesty is one of the most important values any Recruiter should have. It is priority number one for us.  We know the more you trust us, the better the relationship we will have with you. That is extremely important for us.
